MECHELLE’S WAY EXPANDS AGAIN
Mechelle Smith smiles when she thinks back to how it all began. How a teenage girl from a small town in upstate New York went on to become a 14-time U.S. National Champion, 3 Time International Champion, and One time World Champion in Taekwondo.
Smith was walking by her high school gym in 1978 when she saw a classmate doing martial arts exercises. "You don't know anything about that stuff," Smith told him.
Smith admits now she was being a "wise guy". She didn't know anything about martial arts. The young man invited Smith to his Taekwondo School to show her some techniques. She was hooked.
A few minutes turned into a few hours. A few hours into a few weeks. A few weeks into a long and successful career. Smith was an alternate on the 1988 U.S. Olympic team and a Gold Medalist in the '92 Pan-American Games team.
Four years after retiring from competition, Mechelle Smith is still cut and in shape. She wants to help you get in shape, too. It started with her cardio kickboxing video tape released in 2000 - Mechelle's Way - that sold from the U.S. to Europe. And continued with two more, award-winning video programs, all three programs were produced by IFP Films (www.ifpfilms.com).
Now Smith, a sixth-degree black belt, is working on opening her own chain of gyms in the Albany area. This isn't your ordinary ‘get on the treadmill for a few minutes, do a few curls, check out the sites without breaking a sweat’ gym. This gym is serious.
Mechelle Smith has a vision. "I work out every day," Smith says. "I like that. It may be too much for some people, but they can still get in shape. I emphasize a (cardio kickboxing) workout in the fat burning zone." Smith plans on having martial instructors at the gym. She has trained quite a few Black Belts that could certainly fill the positions. (Smith has taught martial arts for 27 years). In addition, there will be cardio kickboxing, boxing, weights and cardio equipment and a Day Spa.
Smith smiles when she thinks about the possibilities.
